What the homestead exemption saves

The exemption lowers the taxable value of your home, so you pay school district taxes on less of it. Own and live in your Texas home? You probably qualify.

$140,000

School taxes

Off your home's value for school district taxes, for every qualifying homestead.

+$60,000

Age 65+ or disabled

An additional $60,000 off school taxes, plus a ceiling (freeze) on your school tax bill.

$12,000

Disabled veterans

Up to $12,000 off, or a total exemption with a 100% disability rating. See my VA loans guide.

$140,000 × your rate ÷ 100

An illustration, not a tax estimate: it multiplies the exemption amount by the rate you enter. It does not account for your home's value, the 65+ ceiling or other exemptions. Your appraisal district and tax office have your actual numbers.

Who qualifies

  • You own the home and live in it as your primary residence.
  • The address on your Texas driver's license or ID matches the home.

Age 65 or older, disabled, or a disabled veteran? Tell your appraisal district when you apply so you get every exemption you qualify for.

Can I apply for a homestead exemption the same year I buy my home?

Yes. Apply as soon as you close. Make sure the address on your Texas driver's license or ID matches the new home, then send the application and a copy of your ID to your county appraisal district by April 30, 2027.

Do I need to pay a company to file my homestead exemption?

No. Applying is free, and you never need to pay a filing service. Download the form from your county appraisal district or the Texas Comptroller, attach a copy of your Texas driver's license or ID, and submit it yourself.
