Which school district?

McAllen city limits cross more than one school district, and the school district is the biggest line on the bill. About 84.1% of the homes are in McAllen ISD, so the tables on this page default to it. Your district depends on your exact address. Look it up on the Hidalgo County Appraisal District property search.

Combined rate per $100 for a home inside McAllen city limits in each school district, with every unit in the table above. Share of homes: 2020 Census housing units by current city limits and school district boundaries (Census TIGERweb). Fast-growing edges are undercounted. Homestead tax uses state-required exemptions only.

Edinburg CISDabout 3.8%2.2092$5,419
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISDabout 3.6%2.3585$5,658

On a $300,000 homestead the Edinburg CISD part of McAllen pays about $5,419 a year, and the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD part about $5,658, a difference of $239.

Also inside city limits, each with under 0.5% of the homes: Mission CISD (combined 2.4605 in 2025). The estimator below includes them.

Of the 53,622 housing units the 2020 Census counted inside McAllen city limits, 45,119 in McAllen ISD, 4,467 in Sharyland ISD, 2,029 in Edinburg CISD, 1,955 in Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD and 45 in Mission CISD.

Units that tax only some homes

Hidalgo County ESD #3 (2025 rate 0.0068) taxes some parcels inside McAllen city limits: the 2025 record of a City of McAllen-owned lot (HCAD 588247) lists it with City of McAllen and McAllen ISD. It was not on any of the 40 sampled homes inside city limits, so the tables leave it out; the estimator lets you add it. A public improvement district (PID) in a newer subdivision bills an assessment, not a tax rate; the title company can tell you if a lot has one.

A McAllen mailing address can sit outside city limits, where there is no city tax and an emergency services district may tax instead. Your appraisal district record lists every unit on your home.
